At 62 years old, a bodybuilder from Sarnia, Ontario, has successfully secured a spot in the upcoming North American championships after placing third at the Canadian Physique Alliance’s National Pro Qualifier in the men’s bodybuilding masters 60-plus category. Bernie Mockler, who narrowly missed winning his pro card in August, expressed satisfaction with his recent achievement, stating that it brings him closer to his ultimate goal.
To attain professional status in bodybuilding, a competitor must obtain a pro card from the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB), which allows participation in professional-level competitions. Only one pro card is awarded annually at the North American championships, making the competition intense. Mockler, under the guidance of his coach Tim Love, emphasizes the dedication and consistency he has maintained over 40 years to reach this point.
Mockler, who works as a nurse at a jail, credits his rigorous weight training, cardio routines, and disciplined eating habits for his youthful energy and physique. He follows a strict daily regimen that includes cardio sessions for fat loss, multiple meals, and weight workouts. Despite his demanding schedule, Mockler finds fulfillment in connecting with inmates through discussions about fitness and nutrition, fostering positive relationships within the correctional facility.
Looking ahead to the upcoming competition, Mockler aims to add 10 pounds of muscle through off-season mass building before transitioning into a rigorous pre-contest conditioning phase. However, before diving into the intense training regimen, Mockler prioritizes rest to recharge after the recent competition. His coach has advised him to take a week off from training to ensure he is rejuvenated and ready for the upcoming challenges.
Mockler’s story highlights his unwavering commitment to his passion for bodybuilding, demonstrating that age is truly just a number when coupled with dedication and perseverance in pursuing one’s goals.
