Montreal residents who rely on the city’s public transportation system should prepare for disruptions as the maintenance workers’ union is planning to strike again, impacting six out of the 14 scheduled strike days. Peak-hour services are expected to be affected from September 22 to October 5 if the strike proceeds as planned. Despite efforts by the STM spokesperson, Katherine Roux-Groleau, to negotiate and prevent the strike, no resolution has been reached yet.
The STM emphasizes the need for an agreement that considers the agency’s continuous operational requirements and financial constraints. Roux-Groleau stresses the importance of providing a safe and reliable bus and Metro service, along with ensuring appropriate staffing levels at all times. She advises commuters to utilize the STM’s website for trip planning, opt for active transportation, and adjust work schedules if feasible.
Negotiations are ongoing between four unions, including the largest representing bus drivers and Metro operators, with the possibility of escalating to an unlimited general strike involving its 4,600 members. The maintenance workers’ strike will impact service on specific days, with reduced schedules during morning and evening rush hours, as well as late-night services.
During the strike period, Metro services will operate during designated hours, while bus services will have limited operating windows. The STM urges passengers to plan their journeys accordingly and explore alternative transportation options, such as Bixi, walking, Communauto, taxis, Uber, or carpooling. Discounts and credits are being offered by various services to support commuters during the strike.
The STM explains that essential maintenance work is crucial for the operation of vehicles and facilities, necessitating service limitations outside peak hours. The agency emphasizes that without maintenance crews, some vehicles cannot operate, leading to reduced rolling stock availability. Despite the strike, monthly passes are recommended for regular riders as essential services will continue, though refunds for passes or coverage for alternative transportation costs are not provided.
For various fare options, the STM maintains the 120-minute transfer window validity, requiring riders to validate their last eligible transfer within the specified timeframe. Additional details about the strike and service updates can be accessed through the STM’s official website.
