Canada and India have agreed to enhance their bilateral relations, marking a significant step forward after tensions arose from the murder of a Canadian Sikh leader. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand held discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi, where both nations outlined a new roadmap for their relationship. Recognizing the importance of a strong Canada-India partnership amidst global uncertainties, the ministers emphasized the need for robust cooperation in various sectors.
The agreement includes plans for ministerial-level talks on trade and investment, as well as collaboration in agriculture, science and technology, civil nuclear initiatives, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and energy. The joint statement highlighted the potential for economic growth and strategic stability through revitalizing this partnership. This move signifies ongoing efforts to thaw the frosty relationship that stemmed from allegations made by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a proponent of the Khalistan movement in British Columbia.
While India has denied the accusations, the fallout led to mutual expulsion of diplomats. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration has since taken steps to mend ties with India, appointing new envoys and engaging in diplomatic discussions. The recent reinstatement of high commissioners was deemed a crucial initial step, with both countries aiming to address shared priorities such as transnational crime and security. However, the approach has faced criticism from the Sikh community, with concerns raised about ongoing threats and foreign interference.
In response to the joint statement by Canada and India, the World Sikh Organization (WSO) of Canada expressed reservations about the lack of assurances on halting external interference and repression. The WSO emphasized the need for Canada to safeguard its sovereignty and uphold the rule of law, cautioning against perceived appeasement. The evolving dynamics between the two nations reflect a nuanced diplomatic landscape that balances cooperation and accountability.
