In northeastern Manitoba, scientists on a tracking expedition studying polar bears were surprised to witness an uncommon event. A polar bear mother and her cub were spotted near Churchill in mid-November, accompanied by a second cub that was confirmed not to be her own. This rare case of cub adoption is only the 13th documented within the western Hudson Bay subpopulation.
Alysa McCall, the director of conservation outreach and a staff scientist with Polar Bears International, expressed a mix of emotions upon confirming the adoption, emphasizing the remarkable nature of polar bears and their capacity to care for each other. Evan Richardson, a polar bear research scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, recounted the moment when his team encountered the mother bear emerging from the denning area in Wapusk National Park, south of Churchill.
Initially, the mother bear was seen with only one cub back in March, but by fall, the family had expanded to three with the addition of the adopted cub. Richardson, reflecting on the unusual occurrence, highlighted the strong maternal instinct that likely drove the mother bear to adopt the lone cub.
The mother bear is estimated to be around five years old, while both cubs are approximately 10-11 months old. Researchers speculate that the adoption was driven by the maternal nature of polar bears, who are known for their nurturing behavior towards young cubs in need.
Typically, polar bear cubs stay with their mothers for two to two-and-a-half years, during which they learn essential survival skills. The successful adoption provides the lone cub with a better chance of reaching adulthood. While the fate of the adopted cub’s biological mother remains unknown, researchers hope that genetic data obtained from the cub will offer valuable insights.
Collaborating with Polar Bears International and the University of Alberta’s polar bear science program, Environment and Climate Change Canada uses GPS collars to collect data on polar bears in the western Hudson Bay region. The sighting of a polar bear cub adoption is a rare occurrence, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts in the face of climate change.
The heartwarming story of the polar bear adoption serves as a testament to the resilience and compassion of these majestic creatures in the wild.
