James Ransone, known for his portrayal of Ziggy Sobotka in the acclaimed series “The Wire” on HBO, has passed away at the age of 46. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that Ransone died from suicide on Friday, as per online records. Besides his role as Sobotka, a character involved in organized crime, Ransone also graced the screen in other TV series like “Bosch,” “Poker Face,” and the miniseries “Generation Kill,” which depicted a Rolling Stone journalist’s experiences alongside American troops in Baghdad in 2003.

In addition to his television work, Ransone left his mark in the film industry with appearances in various horror movies, including “It: Chapter Two,” “The Black Phone,” “Black Phone 2,” and the “Sinister” franchise. In a 2016 interview with Interview magazine, Ransone shared his journey in the entertainment industry, highlighting his struggles and eventual breakthrough with “Generation Kill,” a project that not only shaped his acting career but also deepened his understanding of his family background, particularly his father’s military service during the Vietnam War.

Acknowledging his battles with addiction, Ransone conquered his demons before working on “Generation Kill.” Following his tragic passing, tributes poured in from his loved ones, including his wife, Jamie McPhee, who expressed her love and gratitude for their family. Wendell Pierce, a fellow actor, also shared a heartfelt message in memory of Ransone. To support Ransone’s grieving family, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated.

Efforts to reach out to Ransone’s representatives by The Associated Press were made but remained unanswered. In the wake of this loss, resources for mental health support were provided for those in need of assistance.
