Paris Mayor Ariel Weil, situated in the heart of the city where the Louvre stands, asserts that the security measures at the museum failed during the recent crown jewel heist. This contradicts the statement made by French Culture Minister Rachida Dati.
Following the theft of the priceless French crown jewels by burglars on Sunday, criticism regarding the museum’s security deficiencies spread nationwide. Minister Dati vacillated between attributing the mishap to mismanagement by the museum’s leadership and emphasizing the effectiveness of the security system. She claimed that the security at the Louvre functioned as it should have.
However, Weil questions this assertion, considering the speed at which the theft occurred – taking only seven minutes for the thieves to break into the Apollo gallery window and abscond with jewels valued at $143 million Canadian dollars.
In an interview with “As It Happens” host Nil Koksal, Weil expressed his concerns and desires for increased city involvement in future security plans for the Louvre. He mentioned that despite having more details about the incident, the puzzling circumstances surrounding the heist remain a concern for everyone.
Weil admitted his surprise at the ease with which the thieves accessed the museum, highlighting potential security lapses such as the lack of cameras in certain areas. While acknowledging that the Louvre is a state-managed institution, he emphasized the need for improved security measures and investments, particularly in light of the recent theft.
Regarding the responsibility for the security breach, Weil suggested that the French Ministry of Interior or Justice should be held accountable for any shortcomings. He emphasized the importance of forthcoming investigation conclusions to ascertain the cause of the breach.
Weil also shared insights on the ongoing investigation, mentioning that professionals likely conducted the heist given its meticulous planning and execution. He expressed dismay at the potential fate of the stolen jewels, emphasizing their irreplaceable historical value.
The mayor underscored the significance of the stolen artifacts, not just in monetary terms but as irreplaceable pieces of history. He lamented the loss as a tragic event that transcends mere financial implications.
