Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez claimed victory in the championship final of the Japan Women’s Open, defeating Tereza Valentova from the Czech Republic in a hard-fought match that ended 6-0, 5-7, 6-3. The 23-year-old Fernandez from Laval, Que., dominated the first set in just 28 minutes, but the 18-year-old Valentova put up a strong fight in the subsequent sets at the Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka.
This win marked Fernandez’s second title of the year and the fifth of her career, following her earlier success at the Washington Open. After the match, Fernandez expressed gratitude to her coach and father, Jorge Fernandez, along with her team and family for their unwavering support and sacrifices.
During the match, Fernandez showcased a strong performance with three aces, seven winners, and minimal unforced errors and double faults. She outperformed Valentova by winning 43 points on the receiving end compared to Valentova’s 31. Fernandez maintained a 70% win rate on her first serve and a 46% rate on her second serve. She successfully saved five out of nine break points, while Valentova managed to save nine out of 16.
Following her victory, Fernandez is set to compete in the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, where she will face Maria Sakkari from Greece. Meanwhile, Toronto’s Victoria Mboko will now play against Bianca Andreescu from Mississauga, Ont., in an all-Canadian first-round match due to a draw update.
The upcoming tournament in Tokyo presents another opportunity for Fernandez to showcase her skills and continue her successful run in the tennis circuit.
