Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals following an accusation by Israel against Hamas for breaching a ceasefire agreement in the Palestinian region. Among the casualties were five individuals in a residence in the Bureij refugee camp, four in a building in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood, and five in a car in Khan Younis, including two children. The strikes persisted into the early hours of Wednesday across Gaza, as reported by witnesses and local health authorities.
The Israeli military official stated that Hamas violated the ceasefire by initiating an attack against Israeli forces in an Israeli-controlled area. Israel informed the United States before commencing the airstrikes, according to U.S. officials speaking with The Associated Press on anonymity.
Hamas initially declared its intention to hand over the body of a missing hostage discovered in a tunnel in Gaza to Israel on Tuesday but later postponed the handover, citing alleged Israeli ceasefire violations. Both Hamas and Netanyahu accused each other of breaching the ceasefire terms, escalating tensions between the two parties.
The retrieval of remains of deceased hostages has become a contentious issue in the ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S. President, Donald Trump. Netanyahu accused Hamas of deceitfully handling the remains of an Israeli killed in the conflict, creating a false impression of compliance with ceasefire terms.
Efforts to locate and recover the bodies of remaining hostages have been hampered by the extensive destruction in Gaza, according to a Hamas spokesperson. The search intensified with the deployment of heavy machinery from Egypt, including bulldozers aiding in the search for bodies, believed to be hidden in Hamas’s tunnel network.
The ceasefire, aimed at ending the two-year conflict, has temporarily halted hostilities, with Israel continuing efforts to neutralize Hamas tunnels and Hamas striving to fulfill its obligations under the agreement. The situation remains fragile, with ongoing tensions and mutual accusations of ceasefire violations between the two parties.
