A new documentary sheds light on the birth of the Northern Super League, as it nears its inaugural post-season. Directed by Michele Hozer, “The Pitch” offers an exclusive glimpse into the development of the women’s professional league.
Commencing in late 2022, the documentary tracks league co-founders Diana Matheson and Thomas Gilbert as they transform their Project 8 concept into a tangible reality, culminating in the launch of the six-team league earlier this year. The challenges and uncertainties faced by Matheson and Gilbert during this journey are evident throughout the film.
Matheson expresses her frustration with the prolonged uncertainty, stating, “Tom and I have been living in a lot of uncertainty for the last 15 months, 16 months, and we’re sick of it.” Another scene depicts Matheson diligently working on her laptop in a car, with her wife Anastasia Bucsis providing unwavering support.
The documentary showcases the emotional rollercoaster of creating the league, with moments of stress juxtaposed with triumphs. Hozer, the director, highlights the resilience of Matheson, the steadfast support of Bucsis, and the calm demeanor of Gilbert.
Matheson reveals that the decision to document the league’s inception stemmed from her and Gilbert’s desire, with Hozer being introduced to them by Nathalie Cook, an early Project 8 advisor. Hozer, known for her acclaimed works like “Shake Hands with The Devil” and “Sugar Coated,” recognized the compelling narrative potential of Project 8 but faced challenges securing financing until January 2025.
The film features interviews with various key figures, including former players like Amy Walsh, who shares her struggles balancing motherhood with her soccer career. The documentary also critiques Canada Soccer for its controversial marketing deal and treatment of female players, sparking discussions on gender equality in sports.
Despite the hurdles faced, the documentary captures the determination and passion driving Matheson, Gilbert, and the entire league towards success. The journey to establish the Northern Super League is a testament to the resilience and commitment of those involved, culminating in a groundbreaking moment for women’s soccer.
