In the wake of a series of violent incidents, the Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) has emphasized its commitment to public safety. Police chief Darcy Fleury and acting inspector Chris Carlucci addressed the media at the police station on Wednesday morning to discuss recent cases, including a recent homicide on Edward Street North.
Carlucci stated that the ongoing investigation into the homicide is in its early stages, with limited details available. He then provided an overview of other recent incidents in the area, such as a case involving a 13-year-old charged with conspiracy to commit murder after an online threat related to a potential school attack. The TBPS, with assistance from the FBI, Interpol, and the RCMP, alleged that the youth and an individual from another country were planning an attack.
Another incident involved the assault of an 85-year-old man at an intersection, where a suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder. Additionally, a homicide on Dawson Rd led to an arrest and a charge of second-degree murder. In a firearms-related incident on May and Bethune Streets, a suspect was arrested on Thursday and faces charges related to attempted murder using a firearm.
Regarding reports of the outlaw motorcycle gang Satan’s Choice resurfacing in Thunder Bay, Carlucci confirmed that while the police are aware of the group’s history in the community, there have been no verified sightings in the region. Despite recent events causing concern, Carlucci reassured the public of the police force’s continuous efforts to ensure safety and protection.
Statistics Canada’s latest data shows that Thunder Bay has the highest rates of homicide and violent crimes per capita. Carlucci emphasized the importance of community members reporting crimes and providing information to aid investigations. Chief Fleury is hosting a community information session at Mary JL Black Library, aiming to engage with the public and address community concerns surrounding recent events and police response efforts.
