Leylah Fernandez’s winning streak in Japan continues as the 23-year-old Canadian secured a victory against Maria Sakkari from Greece in the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Fernandez defeated Sakkari 7-6 (5), 6-4 after a two-hour battle, showcasing her prowess with two aces, one double fault, 47 unforced errors, and 32 winners. She maintained a 58% first serve points won and a 50% second serve points won. Saving six of 11 break points and winning six of 10 break points, Fernandez displayed a strong performance.
In another match, Victoria Mboko from Toronto outplayed Bianca Andreescu from Mississauga in an intense all-Ontario clash, with Mboko winning 6-3, 6-3 in 73 minutes. Andreescu committed 19 unforced errors compared to Mboko’s 18. Mboko recorded three double faults, one ace, and 21 winners, winning 77% of first serve points and 50% of second serve points. She also secured three of eight return games.
Denis Shapovalov progressed to the second round of the Swiss Indoors tournament after defeating Marcos Giron from the United States 6-7 (3), 6-0, 7-6 (4). Shapovalov, hailing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, showcased his skill with 13 aces to counter five double faults and converted five of his eight break-point opportunities.
