Leylah Fernandez’s winning streak in Japan continues as the 23-year-old Canadian secured a victory against Maria Sakkari from Greece in the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Fernandez defeated Sakkari 7-6 (5), 6-4 after a two-hour battle, showcasing her prowess with two aces, one double fault, 47 unforced errors, and 32 winners. Denis Shapovalov progressed to the second round of the Swiss Indoors tournament after defeating Marcos Giron from the United States 6-7 (3), 6-0, 7-6 (4). Shapovalov, hailing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, showcased his skill with 13 aces to counter five double faults and converted five of his eight break-point opportunities. Giron struggled to break Shapovalov, managing to do so only twice out of seven chances. Shapovalov, seeded ninth in Basel, is set to face lucky loser Valentin Royer of France in the upcoming round.
