“PM Carney and President Xi Make Diplomatic Strides”

Prime Minister Mark Carney engaged in a bilateral meeting with the president of China during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue. This encounter marked the first formal leader-to-leader contact between Canada and China since 2017. President Xi highlighted the historical cooperation between the two nations and extended an invitation to the prime minister for a state visit, expressing a desire to steer China-Canada relations towards a positive and stable direction.

Acknowledging the recent estrangement between the two countries, Carney stressed the importance of addressing issues through dialogue rather than distance. Following a 39-minute discussion, Carney expressed satisfaction with the talks, signaling a turning point in the relationship that could benefit Canadian families and businesses. Both leaders directed officials to swiftly resolve trade issues and other concerns.

The meeting covered sensitive topics such as agriculture, agri-food products, seafood, and electric vehicles. Trade barriers have impacted major Canadian exports to China, including canola, pork, and minerals. Beyond trade, there are additional complexities in the relationship, including allegations of Chinese interference in Canadian affairs.

Carney’s dialogue with Xi signifies a potential shift in relations, influenced by Canada’s strained ties with the U.S. The recent meeting between Xi and U.S. President Donald Trump eased tensions between the economic giants. The Business Council of Canada emphasized the importance of Canada asserting its interests, especially in light of evolving global dynamics.

The previous high-level contact occurred in 2017 when former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Xi in Beijing. The subsequent years have been marked by mistrust and sporadic economic engagement, exacerbated by events like the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou and the detention of two Canadians in China. These incidents, coupled with allegations of election interference and community intimidation, have strained relations between the two nations.
