Renowned artificial intelligence expert Geoffrey Hinton warns of the potential dangers of unchecked AI advancement, suggesting that without proper oversight, AI could pose a risk of human extinction. Hinton, a recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics and co-founder of the AI Safety Foundation, proposes a solution to this existential threat.
In a recent interview with IDEAS host Nahlah Ayed, Hinton discussed the importance of imbuing AI with “maternal instincts” as a means to ensure the continued survival of humanity. He highlighted various short-term risks associated with AI misuse, such as terrorist groups leveraging AI for malicious purposes and the manipulation of democracy through fake videos.
However, Hinton emphasized his primary concern lies in the long-term potential of AI surpassing human intelligence, raising uncertainties about coexistence. When questioned about the likelihood of AI leading to human extinction within this century, Hinton admitted the unpredictable nature of technological progression, stressing the need for proactive research and caution.
