“YouTube TV Loses Disney Channels in Failed Negotiation”

Must read

YouTube TV subscribers are no longer able to access Disney-owned channels, including ABC and ESPN, due to a failed negotiation for a new content distribution deal. Other channels affected by this dispute on Google’s pay TV platform include Disney Channel, FX, and Nat Geo.

In a recent blog post, Google announced that Disney had carried out its threat to suspend content during the negotiations. The breakdown could impact coverage of various sports events like college football, NBA, NFL, and NHL games.

YouTube TV, the leading internet TV provider in the U.S. with over nine million subscribers, informed viewers about the dispute through on-screen warnings. The platform accused Disney of using the blackout threat as a negotiating strategy to secure higher prices for subscribers, benefiting Disney’s streaming services like Hulu + Live TV and Fubo.

Expressing disappointment over the situation, YouTube encouraged Disney to engage in constructive discussions for a fair resolution. To compensate subscribers for the content loss, YouTube TV pledged a $20 credit if Disney channels remain unavailable for an extended period. The base subscription plan for YouTube TV costs $82.99 per month.

Disney, on the other hand, claimed that YouTube TV is not willing to pay reasonable rates for its channels, depriving subscribers of valued content. Disney criticized Google for leveraging its market dominance to stifle competition and disrupt established industry standards. Despite the conflict, Disney expressed its commitment to swiftly resolving the issue.
