Must read

Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov progressed to the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel, Switzerland, after securing victories in straight sets on Thursday.

Auger-Aliassime, the reigning champion from 2022 and 2023, showcased an impressive performance by delivering 28 aces in his 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) triumph against Marin Cilic of Croatia. The Montreal native dominated by winning 96% of his first-serve points without facing any break points. This win extended his winning streak indoors to six matches following his recent triumph in Brussels, where he claimed the title. As the fifth seed, Auger-Aliassime is aiming for a spot in the ATP Finals in Turin.

In another match, Shapovalov defeated Valentin Royer of France with a score of 7-6 (5), 6-2, showcasing his skill with 11 aces. The player from Richmond Hill, Ontario, managed to break his opponent’s serve three times and won an impressive 76% of his first-serve points.

Shapovalov is set to face Joao Fonseca of Brazil in the next round, while Auger-Aliassime will take on Jaume Munar of Spain, who caused an upset by defeating second-seeded Ben Shelton of the United States with a score of 6-3, 6-4.

If both Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov secure victories in the quarterfinals, they will potentially face each other in an all-Canadian semifinal showdown.
