Prince Edward Island’s Premier, Rob Lantz, has urged the federal RCMP and Canada’s anti-money-laundering agency to launch immediate and transparent investigations into allegations of foreign interference and money laundering linked to certain Buddhist groups on the island. Lantz emphasized the need for clarity following assertions made by a former solicitor general and a former RCMP superintendent during a recent press conference in Ottawa, prompting concerns among Islanders.
In letters addressed to RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme and FINTRAC CEO Sarah Paquet, the premier’s office highlighted longstanding public speculation surrounding two specific Buddhist groups in eastern P.E.I. The correspondence underlined allegations of foreign involvement and even suggested the island had been used as a base for the Chinese Communist Party.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the letters stressed the importance of addressing these claims through established legal processes rather than speculation. The premier’s office emphasized the need for responsible handling of the matter to maintain transparency and community trust.
GEBIS, one of the groups under scrutiny, welcomed the call for investigation, expressing relief at the opportunity for a transparent inquiry. The organization emphasized its commitment to cooperating fully with the authorities and denounced baseless allegations that have circulated for an extended period.
The Town of Three Rivers, where these Buddhist organizations are situated, voiced its support for the federal investigation, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in upholding public trust. Local officials echoed concerns raised by constituents and highlighted the necessity of federal intervention in addressing the allegations.
Amid growing unease and distrust, government officials emphasized the significance of allowing the investigative process to unfold, ensuring a secure and welcoming environment for Islanders. The P.E.I. government pledged full collaboration with federal agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation and provide clarity on the matter.
