Prime Minister Mark Carney made a quick visit to Kitchener on Friday for a refreshing break. During his visit to southern Ontario, Carney stopped by the Schwaben Club in Breslau, near Kitchener, to participate in the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest festivities. Utilizing a wooden mallet, he tapped a keg at the fest hall and enjoyed a beer while conversing with local officials.
This visit was sandwiched between a morning commitment in the Niagara region and an evening event in Brampton to celebrate Diwali. Known as the largest Oktoberfest celebration outside of Munich, Germany, K-W Oktoberfest attracts prominent figures. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had graced the event in 2016 by tapping the keg at the opening ceremonies, and he made another appearance in 2023.
In the previous year, in 2015, Stephen Harper was present at the K-W Oktoberfest parade, although he did not partake in the parade due to an ongoing federal election. This year, Canadian musician Steven Page tapped the keg, and former Canadian Football League player turned Toronto Argonauts general manager Michael Pinball Clemons led the parade.
The K-W Oktoberfest event continues to draw attention from various notable personalities, adding to the festive spirit of the celebration.
