Boeing is set to allocate $36 million towards research and development projects focused on composite aerospace manufacturing at its Winnipeg plant, as announced by Al Meinzinger, the company’s president. The Winnipeg facility, a key player in the Canadian aerospace industry for over five decades, is the largest advanced composite site in the country.
The funding will support initiatives to improve composite fabrication capabilities, such as the implementation of automated processes and collaborative robotics. Some of the projects will be carried out in partnership with the National Research Council of Canada. Composite manufacturing materials are crucial for enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing weight in airplane parts.
Ibrahim Yimer, vice-president of transportation and manufacturing at the National Research Council, highlighted the significance of industry-government partnerships in driving innovation. Matt Baxter, an engineering senior manager at Boeing’s Winnipeg site, emphasized that the investment will expedite production automation projects, focusing on enhancing workplace safety, product quality, and operational efficiency.
The initiative aligns with the federal government’s industrial and technological benefits policy, which designated Boeing’s CP-8A Poseidon as Canada’s multi-mission aircraft. The objective is to award 70% of federal defense contracts to Canadian companies within ten years.
MP Doug Eyolfson praised the investment’s impact on the local workforce and the facility’s future. Premier Wab Kinew expressed confidence in Manitoba’s aerospace sector, hinting at additional investments following discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney. MP Ben Carr echoed the optimism, emphasizing the importance of Manitobans’ contributions to the aerospace industry.
Mayor Scott Gillingham highlighted Winnipeg’s “sky economy,” underscoring the pivotal role of the city’s aviation, aerospace, and defense sectors in shaping its future. The ongoing growth in these sectors presents abundant job opportunities and fosters community development.
