Ukrainian soldiers have adopted a unique points-based system inspired by video games to reward successful drone strikes. This system, known as the Brave1 Market, allows soldiers to earn points for various actions such as killing a Russian soldier (12 points) or destroying a tank (40 points). These points can then be used to acquire equipment and drones to enhance their capabilities on the battlefield.
The Brave1 Market, likened to an Amazon marketplace for war, was launched in April and has since expanded with 400 drone units participating. Points are awarded for different actions, including wounding an enemy soldier (8 points), capturing a specialist drone operator (25 points), and capturing a Russian soldier alive (120 points). Each attack’s video is reviewed by Kyiv before points are allocated.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s minister of digital transformation, expressed support for the system, emphasizing its role in boosting military motivation and effectiveness in countering the enemy. However, not all officials share the same sentiment, with concerns raised about the potential dehumanizing effects of gamifying warfare.
Despite criticisms, journalist Tim Mak believes that the system is appropriate given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where tens of thousands have lost their lives since Russia’s invasion in 2022. The system allows units to procure equipment based on their front-line needs, offering flexibility in addressing specific challenges faced by commanders.
Experts like Christian Enemark stress the importance of upholding ethical standards in warfare, particularly in the context of advancing technology. While acknowledging the ethical dilemmas posed by the points system, Mak argues that those who are directly involved in combat situations have a different perspective, driven by the urgent need to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty and prevent further devastation.
As Ukraine continues to face relentless attacks, the debate over the ethical implications of the points-based system underscores the complex moral considerations in modern warfare.
