“Northern Lights Shows to Dim in Southern Canada”

Must read

Southern Canadians have been enjoying vibrant displays of colorful northern lights in recent years due to increased solar activity. However, as the sun transitions into a quieter phase of its 11-year cycle, these celestial shows will become less frequent in regions like Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

According to Ethen Sun, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Toronto, the best opportunities to witness the auroras will continue to be in the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut. These areas, particularly the auroral oval encircling the magnetic poles, offer prime visibility for the dancing lights.

The sun’s activity fluctuates between a high-activity solar maximum and a low-activity solar minimum. Currently, the sun is moving towards its minimum phase, expected around 2031. This shift results in decreased auroral displays as the solar activity declines.

Auroras are most commonly observed around the 60th parallel, with near-nightly sightings regardless of the sun’s activity. The optimal viewing time for auroras is between September and April, with heightened displays during the spring and autumn equinoxes.

While the northern lights have been a significant attraction for tourists, especially from the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, and Australia, in regions like Yukon, the focus on aurora viewing may shift as the solar activity declines. Tourists are also drawn to experience Inuit culture, landscapes, and wildlife in Nunavut, with the auroras being an added bonus rather than the main attraction.

In the Northwest Territories, the northern lights are a prominent feature, with Yellowknife boasting up to 240 nights of auroral displays annually. Around 41% of tourists visit N.W.T. specifically for the northern lights experience, contributing significantly to the local economy.

As the solar maximum phase fades, territories like Nunavut may consider promoting themselves as prime locations for northern lights viewing. Despite the fluctuations in solar activity, businesses in these regions remain optimistic, as the allure of the auroras continues to attract visitors beyond expectations.
