Ye, the artist previously identified as Kanye West, has decided to delay his upcoming performance in Marseille, France, following the announcement by French authorities that they would move to prohibit the concert. This choice from Ye came after being barred from entering the United Kingdom, where he was set to headline the Wireless Festival in July, due to backlash over past antisemitic comments.
In a statement shared on the social platform X, Ye expressed his decision to postpone the Marseille show until further notice, emphasizing his commitment to making amends and asking for understanding regarding the delay. The artist, who altered his name in 2021, was originally scheduled to perform at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome on June 11.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez affirmed that efforts were being made to block the show from taking place as intended. Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan has been vocal in opposing Ye’s visit to the culturally diverse city known for its extensive history of immigration.
Ye has faced significant criticism for his antisemitic statements and public admiration of Adolf Hitler. Notably, he released a song titled “Heil Hitler” and promoted a swastika T-shirt on his website. These actions led to the cancellation of his visa in Australia after the release of the controversial single.
In his ongoing efforts to address the situation, Ye issued a public apology in January through a letter published in the Wall Street Journal, attributing his behavior to a manic episode resulting from bipolar disorder. In his most recent message on X, Ye expressed his accountability for his actions while also expressing his appreciation for his fans and anticipation for future performances.
The event’s cancellation in Marseille and the ongoing controversy surrounding Ye’s past conduct highlight the complexities and challenges faced by the artist in balancing personal expression with public perception.
