Police in Nichols Hills, located north of downtown Oklahoma City, are investigating a burglary that occurred on Friday at the residence of NBA player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from the Oklahoma City Thunder. The incident took place while Gilgeous-Alexander was participating in a game the previous night, during which the Thunder were playing against the Washington Wizards at home.
Authorities were alerted to the burglary around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday. Although the exact items stolen were not disclosed, law enforcement officials confirmed that the suspects had fled the scene before their arrival. It was emphasized that there is no immediate threat to the public, and no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Similar occurrences targeting prominent athletes have been on the rise in the United States, with high-profile figures such as NFL players Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Joe Burrow, NBA star Luka Doncic, and NHL player Evgeni Malkin falling victim to home burglaries in recent months. Thieves often exploit the absence of athletes during game days to break into their residences, typically entering through rear windows.
In response to these security breaches, the NBA issued a memo in November 2024 advising teams to enhance their home security measures. Recommendations included upgrading alarm systems with cameras, storing valuables in secure safes, removing online property listings showing interior photos, hiring protective guard services during extended absences, and utilizing guard dogs for added protection.
