Saskatchewan Roughriders supporters are edging closer to lawful tailgating, pending the specifics within forthcoming legislation and liquor regulations. The government hinted at The Tailgating Act during the recent throne speech, aiming to permit pre-game tailgating at Mosaic Stadium for Saskatchewan Roughriders matches.
Although traditionally associated with alcohol consumption in stadium parking lots on game days, several CFL markets with tailgating policies prohibit alcohol. For instance, Calgary strictly prohibits open alcohol with police monitoring, while Edmonton’s stadium features designated tailgating areas that are not licensed for open alcohol consumption.
The Saskatchewan government mentioned that the legislation would outline the tailgating parameters once introduced in the legislature. CEO Craig Reynolds of the Saskatchewan Roughriders highlighted that alcohol regulations are pivotal to the team’s request for a tailgating law, citing limitations on alcohol consumption and purchasing under the current legislation.
Reynolds emphasized collaboration with the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) to establish drinking guidelines, focusing on security, policing, and restricted access considerations. The new SLGA permits are anticipated before the 2026 football season commences.
Premier Scott Moe and Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski expressed support for the new tailgating framework, emphasizing safety while enhancing fan experience. Reynolds mentioned ongoing discussions with teams like Calgary and Edmonton and exploring tailgating models in other markets, such as the Buffalo Bills’ policy.
Envisioning a spirited atmosphere at Mosaic Stadium, Reynolds noted the enthusiastic fan support for tailgating, aiming to cultivate a joyful and secure environment. Rick Bennett, CEO of the Regina Exhibition Association, endorsed the initiative, highlighting its potential to bolster community vibrancy and enhance the Rider fan base.
