A renowned music studio in Hamilton, known for its association with music legends such as Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash, is set to commemorate its 50 years in the industry. Grant Avenue Studio, established in 1976 by Canadian record producer Daniel Lanois, his brother Bob Lanois, and partner Bob Doidge, operates from a converted Edwardian-style residence on Grant Ave. near Main St. E., attracting top talents globally and nationally over the years.
In 2023, Mike Bruce, along with Debbie Bruce and Marco Mondano, acquired the studio, describing it as a “living museum” exuding a palpable energy from its rich 50-year history. The studio, initially built without much expertise but later transformed into a soundproof haven through trial and error, has retained its original charm and allure.
Local music enthusiast Jamie Tennant, the program director at CFMU, views Grant Avenue Studio as a dynamic entity that has evolved significantly over the years, drawing musicians with its historical significance. The studio’s appeal lies in its association with renowned artists like Gordon Lightfoot, Johnny Cash, and Brian Eno, the British musician and producer known for collaborations with iconic rock and pop acts.
Despite minimal upgrades since its establishment, such as new flooring and acoustic treatments, the studio’s unique features, like sand-filled window wells for soundproofing, continue to fascinate visitors. Bruce acknowledges the diverse talent pool in Hamilton and plans to celebrate the studio’s 50th anniversary with the ongoing “Grant Avenue Studio Presents” series, which showcases local artists in intimate YouTube concerts.
Featuring a vintage MCI JH-500C console, similar to the one used in producing classic albums like The Eagles’ “Hotel California” and ACDC’s “Back in Black,” the studio embodies a blend of music history, technology, and ambiance that attracts artists. Bruce underscores the significance of reaching the 50-year milestone, making Grant Avenue Studio one of the oldest continuously operating studios in Canada.
To mark the special occasion, the studio has lined up various events, including an anniversary celebration, an exhibition at Hamilton Civic Museums, and the revival of the Road to Supercrawl contest, offering bands a chance to win a recording package and a mainstage performance at the Supercrawl festival.
