Residents of Old Ottawa South are rejoicing over the installation of new signage recounting the discovery of an ancient boulder unearthed in their neighborhood during the COVID-19 crisis. At a recent unveiling event at Windsor Park, Bellwood Avenue resident Gauri Sreenivasan emphasized the significance of the sign in providing public education and engagement.
The signage narrates the story of the massive erratic rock, now dubbed the “Bellwood Boulder,” which was left behind by glaciers around 10,000 years ago and remained hidden under Bellwood Avenue until April 2021. During water pipe replacement work, the boulder was uncovered, prompting community interest and involvement.
Amidst the pandemic restrictions, Sreenivasan and other residents found solace in the boulder, using it as a gathering point and a source of interaction during challenging times. The rock became a symbol of unity within the neighborhood, with residents sharing stories and forming connections around it.
When there was a proposal to break down the boulder for removal, Sreenivasan and the community advocated for its preservation, recognizing its role in fostering a sense of togetherness during a time of isolation. The united effort led to the relocation of the boulder to Windsor Park, symbolizing the strength of community collaboration.
