Canada Post has revealed that almost 500,000 addresses will no longer have home delivery starting next year. In 2027, 37 communities will transition to community mailboxes, as announced by the Crown corporation. This figure adds to the 136,000 addresses previously disclosed in April.
The impacted mailboxes are primarily located in Ontario and Quebec, including areas in the Greater Toronto Region, southwestern and eastern Ontario, Montreal, Quebec City, and Trois-Rivières. Additionally, several communities in British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Halifax, Calgary, and Edmonton are affected.
The latest regions to be affected include Halifax, Fredericton, Oromocto, L’Ancienne-Lorette, Laval, Longueuil, Quebec City, Saint-Hubert, Trois-Rivières, Ajax, Brampton, Hawkesbury, Kitchener, London, Mississauga, Ottawa, Pickering, Portage la Prairie, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Burnaby, Colwood, Coquitlam, Esquimalt, Kelowna, Langford, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Saanich, Songhees Nation, Victoria, View Royal, Westbank First Nation, and West Kelowna.
Canada Post’s plan involves converting all four million addresses still receiving door-to-door delivery to shared mailboxes, each with its individual locked box. The process is anticipated to span five years and result in annual savings of $400 million upon completion.
In a statement, Canada Post highlighted that the transition to community mailboxes is a crucial part of its strategy to modernize the postal service effectively and sustainably. The company is currently undergoing significant restructuring efforts following years of financial challenges. In its worst financial year on record, 2025 saw Canada Post reporting $1.57 billion in losses before tax. To stay operational, the national mail carrier has relied on $2 billion in federal loans.
Notably, the majority of Canadian households already receive mail through community, apartment lobby, or post office mailboxes. This shift to community mailboxes is expected to enhance security by securing nearly all mail and parcels under lock and key. Canada Post also offers an accommodation program for individuals facing challenges accessing community mailboxes, with the possibility of weekly home delivery in certain cases.
A list of postal codes earmarked for conversion to community mailboxes has been released, covering various regions across Canada.
