The ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation has initiated a series of scientific and economic research projects focusing on Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake as part of a comprehensive water stewardship plan. This initiative has sparked discussions around recreational boating in the area.
Chief (Nasuʔkin) Donald Sam of ʔAkisq̓nuk emphasized the importance of stewardship to the Ktunaxa people, stating that credible data is essential for decision-making. The First Nation has allocated $200,000 for mapping the East Kootenay lakes, assessing shoreline conditions, sediment movement, and evaluating the economic significance of recreation activities.
While these stewardship discussions have raised concerns among some residents regarding potential restrictions impacting the local economy, Chief Sam clarified that the goal is not to hinder economic development but to determine sustainable recreational practices that support the long-term health of the lakes.
The studies coincide with increased scrutiny of wake-surfing boats, which are believed to disturb sediment, cause shoreline damage, and contribute to environmental degradation in smaller lakes like Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake. These lakes, being relatively shallow, are susceptible to wake disturbance and erosion.
Community groups such as Lake Windermere Ambassadors already advocate for responsible boating practices, urging motorized boaters to adhere to speed limits and regulations. Chief Sam suggested that traditional boating and fishing activities may be more environmentally sustainable on these narrow lakes.
District of Invermere Mayor Al Miller expressed support for a science-based approach to addressing the issue, emphasizing the importance of balancing economic impacts with environmental considerations. He highlighted the significance of considering all data to make informed decisions regarding lake stewardship.
Chief Sam reassured that the stewardship planning process is in its early stages, with no immediate restrictions planned for this summer.
