New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer has been named the NHL’s top rookie for the month of October. He impressed with three goals and five assists in 11 games, ranking third among all rookies in points. Schaefer, an 18-year-old from Hamilton, was the Islanders’ first overall pick in the recent draft.
In addition, Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel was recognized as the league’s first star for his outstanding performance in the first month of the season. Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele and Montreal Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes were named the second and third stars, respectively.
Schaefer’s achievements include setting a new record as the youngest player to score a point in his NHL debut at 18 years and 34 days. He also became the youngest defenseman to score his first goal since Ross Johnstone over 80 years ago. Moreover, Schaefer maintained a six-game point streak at the start of the season, including a game-winning goal against the San Jose Sharks.
Meanwhile, Eichel, after signing a lucrative contract extension with Vegas, led the league with eight goals and 11 assists in 11 games. Scheifele, on the other hand, became Winnipeg’s all-time leading scorer with nine goals in his first 11 games. Dobes showcased his skills by going 6-0-0 in October with impressive stats for the Canadiens.
