Dongfeng, a Chinese automaker, has revealed its electric vehicle lineup at Montreal’s Old Port, marking its entry into the Canadian market. The showcased EV models, BOX 01 and Vigo, are currently in the process of obtaining certification to meet Canadian safety and regulatory standards.
The BOX 01 is a compact electric vehicle, while the Vigo is an electric SUV. Both models are expected to be priced below $35,000, according to Julie Mazorra Fernández, Director of North World Industry, the official Canadian distributor for Dongfeng.
The company aims to have these models available for purchase in Canada by next year. The reduced tariffs on Chinese EVs have sparked increased interest in the market, with a recent agreement allowing the import of a specified number of Chinese EVs annually.
Quebec is the initial launch market for Dongfeng due to its favorable conditions for electric vehicle adoption, including consumer familiarity, affordable electricity, and high public acceptance. Following Quebec, the company plans to expand into British Columbia and Ontario.
Despite limited immediate sales prospects in Canada, Chinese automakers view the country as a strategic gateway to the larger U.S. market. The similarity in consumer preferences and industry regulations between Canada and the U.S. makes Canada an ideal testing ground for Chinese car manufacturers eyeing the American market.
The entry of lower-priced Chinese EVs into Canada is expected to increase competition and potentially lower prices in the electric vehicle market, benefiting consumers. Details on where consumers can purchase Dongfeng’s EV models will be provided upon completion of the certification process.
