“Monster Tornado Strikes Western Manitoba, Farms Damaged”

Severe thunderstorms swept through western Manitoba on Sunday, causing at least one tornado described as a “monster” by storm chaser Aaron Jayjack. The tornado touched down southwest of Rossburn, confirmed by Environment and Climate Change Canada, with reports of another near Roblin. Jayjack, tracking supercells, witnessed the tornado’s rapid formation and progression towards Rossburn, narrowly missing homes but impacting a farmhouse.

Witness Barb McIvor captured images of the tornado, calling it an “amazing sight.” Fortunately, the residents of the damaged home were unharmed, prompting Jayjack and emergency responders to ensure their safety. The Rossburn Fire Department reported significant damage to the farmhouse, barn, and surrounding property, emphasizing the historical loss of the century-old home.

Local officials, including Mayor Shirley Kalyniuk and Deputy Mayor Adam Grabowski, expressed concern for the affected individuals and pledged support. Jayjack estimated the tornado as potentially an EF3 on the enhanced Fujita scale, with the Northern Tornadoes Project launching an investigation for a damage rating.

The storm also brought hail and strong winds to the area, with more inclement weather forecasted. The unsettled pattern has prompted authorities to monitor the situation closely. Recent storms and flooding in Manitoba have already caused extensive damage and evacuations, underscoring the region’s vulnerability to severe weather events.
