MP Jaime Battiste has been fined four times for breaking election regulations during his bid for the Liberal nomination in his Nova Scotia constituency in 2019. Federal Elections Commissioner Caroline Simard revealed that Battiste was penalized a total of $600 for four infractions, which included surpassing the maximum personal donation limit to his campaign, depositing campaign contributions into his personal bank account, personally covering various campaign costs, and submitting a misleading declaration to Elections Canada.

Individuals are restricted to donating $1,600 annually to a political candidate or party, with candidates allowed an additional $1,000 donation. Simard determined that Battiste had contributed over $4,000 to his campaign during the nomination phase. Furthermore, Battiste received over $8,000 in donations in his personal bank account before transferring the money to his campaign account, violating Canada’s election regulations that only permit a candidate’s financial agent to accept campaign donations.

Campaign expenses should only be paid by a financial agent, yet Battiste incurred expenses exceeding $700, paid using his personal credit card, according to Simard’s findings. Battiste acknowledged making errors during the 2019 nomination process in a statement to CBC News, stating that efforts were taken to rectify the mistakes to the best of their ability.

Despite the fines, Battiste emphasized his growth, having participated in three successful elections since the incidents and being recognized as a candidate for leadership in 2025. Simard reduced the fines considering mitigating circumstances, such as Battiste’s cooperation with the investigation. Battiste confirmed that the fines have been fully settled.
