In a landscape filled with reboots, remakes, and sequels, an original narrative has taken center stage. “Backrooms” has become A24’s most successful global release, surpassing $200 million in ticket sales, marking a significant milestone for the studio.
The horror sensation created by YouTuber Kane Parsons has raked in an impressive $212 million worldwide in under two weeks, with $135 million coming from the U.S. and Canada alone. This achievement dethroned last year’s “Marty Supreme,” led by Timothée Chalamet, which previously held A24’s top spot with earnings of $191 million.
“Backrooms” has shattered multiple records for A24, the studio renowned for producing prestigious films like “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Moonlight,” and “The Drama.” Parsons, at just 20 years old, has become the youngest director to dominate the box office and holds the same title for A24.
The film’s remarkable success includes the biggest opening weekend in A24’s history, grossing $81 million in the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, “Backrooms” made history as the largest original horror debut ever and became A24’s highest-grossing film domestically in a mere four days, crossing the $200 million revenue mark.
All these achievements were accomplished on a modest $10 million budget, showcasing the film’s exceptional performance in the industry.
“Backrooms” initially began as a personal project on Parsons’ laptop, utilizing 3D animation software. The concept gained traction through a viral 22-video found-footage YouTube series that Parsons launched in 2022. Garnering over 25 million views and a devoted following, the series caught the attention of A24, leading to the film adaptation.
The meticulous attention to detail evident in the YouTube series impressed A24, prompting them to collaborate with Parsons on expanding the concept into a feature film exploring liminal spaces. Producer Chris Ferguson expressed confidence in Parsons’ transition to the big screen, emphasizing the authenticity maintained from the original series.
The movie, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, follows a furniture store owner who discovers a mysterious door in his shop, unveiling an endless maze of vacant rooms. As he vanishes, his therapist embarks on a perilous journey to rescue him, delving into the enigmatic depths of the unknown.
In addition to A24, the film was a joint production with Chernin Entertainment, Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps, and horror maestro James Wan, known for his work on “The Conjuring” and “Insidious.”
The success of “Backrooms” is a testament to the power of original storytelling and the seamless transition from digital platforms to the silver screen, captivating audiences worldwide with its unique narrative and immersive experience.
