“Rapper Tupac to Make Digital Debut in Video Game”

Must read

Last week, Jeff Gerstmann reacted with disbelief to the news that the iconic rapper Tupac Shakur would be digitally featured in an upcoming video game. The long-time games journalist found the announcement of Tupac’s inclusion in the game to be somewhat absurd and ridiculous.

During the Summer Game Fest, where various video game trailers and marketing hype were showcased, gamers and influencers expressed surprise and confusion at the unexpected appearance of the influential American rapper and political activist, who passed away in 1996.

The game, named “Stranger Than Heaven,” is being developed by the Japan-based Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, a subsidiary of Sega. Acting as a prequel to the well-known “Like a Dragon” series, the game is set in the early 1900s over a span of approximately 50 years.

This announcement is just one of many unconventional decisions made by the studio recently, sparking skepticism and raising questions about whether Tupac Shakur’s estate is preserving the rapper’s legacy thoughtfully.

The character Tupac will play in the game, named Amaru after his real middle name, remains largely undisclosed, with developers emphasizing that the integration of Tupac into the game is being handled with great respect for his legacy, avoiding the use of artificial intelligence and basing his design on authentic archival materials.

Snoop Dogg, who is also featured in the game alongside his son Cordell Broadus, revealed that they are closely collaborating with Tupac’s estate on this project. According to Snoop Dogg, including Tupac in the game felt like a natural decision due to the enduring presence of his likeness and spirit.

Masayoshi Yokoyama, the head of RGG Studio, informed Game Informer magazine that they obtained approval from both Tupac’s estate and surviving family members for the inclusion of Tupac in the game.

Tupac’s estate, currently managed by music executive Tom Whalley, has been associated with controversial use of the rapper’s likeness, including the sale of NFT photos in 2021. This has led to concerns about the estate’s handling of Tupac’s legacy, as noted by Gerstmann.

Despite the initial surprise at Tupac’s appearance in the game, some have raised concerns about the choice, considering the game’s focus on gangland crime and the potential implications of associating Tupac with such themes.

Overall, the inclusion of Tupac in “Stranger Than Heaven” has sparked discussions about the representation of deceased figures in new media formats and the ethical considerations surrounding posthumous appearances in digital content.
