“Canada and U.S. Unite on Defence Projects, Address Potential Obstacles”

Defence Minister David McGuinty addressed concerns regarding potential obstacles in Canada-U.S. defence discussions, emphasizing the collaboration on joint projects like integrated air missile defence systems. McGuinty highlighted the integrated defence system and Canada’s active participation in NORAD, a unique binational command.

During an interview on Rosemary Barton Live, McGuinty discussed Canada’s review of the F-35 contract with U.S.-based Lockheed Martin, which U.S. ambassador Pete Hoekstra had referred to as a point of contention. McGuinty mentioned productive talks with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, focusing on areas of cooperation, especially integrated air missile defence systems, suggesting that the term “irritants” might not be entirely accurate.

The review of the F-35 contract, initiated by former defence minister Bill Blair in March amidst escalating trade tensions with the U.S., remains ongoing. Prime Minister Mark Carney will make a decision on the matter at an appropriate time. McGuinty clarified that discussions on the F-35 jets also touch upon U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed Golden Dome, a comprehensive defence system combining surveillance and missile defense capabilities.

Aside from these discussions, Canada is strengthening its defence ties with Europe, as evidenced by a strategic agreement signed by Carney with the EU. This agreement aims to reduce reliance on the U.S. and allows Canadian companies to participate in the ReArm Europe program. The EU ambassador to Canada, Geneviève Tuts, emphasized the significance of the partnership and ongoing negotiations to materialize concrete outcomes.

Regarding Canada’s commitment to meeting the NATO 2% spending target by March 2026, Tuts acknowledged that this pledge facilitated the EU partnership discussions. McGuinty affirmed the government’s confidence in meeting the spending target through strategic investments, including updates to the remuneration packages for Canadian Armed Forces members.
