The federal government’s new “Buy Canadian” initiative goes into effect today, aiming to revolutionize its procurement practices. This strategy, introduced earlier this fall, seeks to prioritize Canadian products and workers in federal purchasing decisions. It applies to various government sectors such as major projects, housing offices, defence procurement, and community infrastructure supported by federal funding.
Under the initial phase of the policy, contracts exceeding $25 million must give preference to Canadian businesses and materials. Additionally, construction and defence projects must utilize Canadian-made steel, aluminum, and wood products to bolster industries impacted by trade tensions, particularly from the U.S.
Procurement Minister Joël Lightbound emphasizes that this policy underscores the government’s commitment to supporting Canadian workers and industries, strengthening domestic supply chains in the process.
