Canadian cyclist Derek Gee is entangled in a potential financial liability exceeding $48.6 million as he seeks to part ways with the Israel-Premier Tech team. Despite the looming damages, Gee remains resolute in his decision, citing his inability to continue racing for the team.

In a statement shared on social media, the 28-year-old from Ottawa emphasized his termination of the contract with just cause, highlighting his concerns regarding his relationship with the team principal and apprehensions related to safety and personal beliefs impacting his ability to compete. Israel-Premier Tech acknowledged the contract termination issue, stating that it is currently under review by the UCI Arbitral Board, refraining from further comments on the matter.

The global cycling governing body, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), oversees world cycling events. Israel-Premier Tech has faced backlash recently, with protests targeting the team. Amid the conflict in Gaza, a Montreal-based human rights group urged Mayor Valerie Plante to prevent the team from participating in the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal. The team also faced security concerns in Italy and a withdrawal from the Giro dell’Emilia invitation.

In response to Gee’s legal actions, Israel-Premier Tech insists that the contract remains valid, leaving the resolution of the dispute in the hands of UCI and legal representatives. Gee refuted any monetary motivations behind his decisions, emphasizing his exercise of professional and personal rights.

Established as the Cycling Academy team 11 years ago, Israel-Premier Tech rebranded four years ago and is undergoing further changes to move away from its Israeli identity. The team boasts extensive Canadian connections, including Canadian riders and management personnel. Gee, who ascended to the WorldTour squad from the academy in 2022, is part of this Canadian presence within the team.
