“Conservatives Criticize Liberal Government Over Rising Food Prices”

Must read

The federal Conservatives are criticizing the Liberal government for the increasing food inflation, just as the minority government gears up to unveil a budget requiring support from at least one other party. Statistics Canada reported that grocery prices rose by four percent in September compared to the same period last year, following a 3.5 percent increase in August, with the overall inflation rate climbing to 2.4 percent.

Although food inflation has decreased from its peak of over 11 percent during the pandemic, the rate of increase has been on the rise since April, driven by shortages of beef and coffee, as well as higher prices for fresh vegetables and sugary products. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the prime minister in the House, pointing out that grocery prices are rising twice as fast as the target, and urged for tax reductions and decreased inflationary spending in the upcoming budget to make life more affordable for Canadians.

Finance Minister François-Philippe hinted at positive developments in the upcoming budget release on Nov. 4, in response to the Conservatives’ calls for an “affordability agenda.” Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government faces pressure to address the cost of living, as promised by Carney after his cabinet swearing-in ceremony in May.

Conservative demands, highlighted in a letter to Carney, criticized “hidden taxes on food” as a factor in the escalating costs. Poilievre argued that various regulations and taxes indirectly impact food prices, despite food in grocery stores not being directly taxed. However, global factors like climate change contributing to worldwide food price increases cast doubt on Poilievre’s claims regarding the main contributors to food inflation in Canada.

Government officials, including Champagne and Mackinnon, stressed efforts to lower the cost of living, mentioning initiatives like a grocery code of conduct and a national school food program. Mackinnon criticized the opposition’s demands for an affordable budget as “ludicrous,” emphasizing the need for a serious debate ahead of the budget release. The government aims to offer Canadians predictability, stability, and a plan to address the critical economic situation.
