Canada’s Cynthia Appiah secured a silver medal in the final World Cup monobob race of the season held in Lillehammer, Norway. Appiah achieved a two-run combined time of 1 minute and 48.66 seconds down the 16-corner track.

Expressing her excitement, Appiah stated, “Finally, this feels amazing. It’s been a challenging season for me, similar to last year, waiting until the last World Cup to reach the podium. I’m choosing to view it positively, as we are peaking at the right time before the World Championships. There couldn’t be a better time for this.”

This marked the 11th monobob podium finish in Appiah’s career. The 34-year-old had not seen the Canadian flag raised above the podium since last year when she clinched the bronze medal in the final race of the season in Lake Placid, New York.

Appiah expressed her pride, saying, “It’s great to see the Canadian flag everywhere we go, but it’s always special to see your flag raised above the podium (especially on National Flag Day). Standing on the podium, watching that flag rise, always reminds me how amazing it is to represent our country and assures us of the immense support we receive from fellow Canadians back home, regardless of our results.”

In the same event, Germany’s Lisa Buckwitz secured the bronze medal, securing the overall season points title. Australia’s Bree Walker claimed the gold in the race and finished second in the overall points standings.

Appiah finished seventh in the overall season standings. Meanwhile, the U.S. opted out of the World Cup finale to focus on preparations for the upcoming bobsleigh and skeleton world championships in Lake Placid, New York.

In the men’s competition, Francesco Friedrich claimed the top spot in the two-man bobsleigh world rankings once again. The German athlete secured his seventh World Cup season title on Saturday with a second-place finish in Lillehammer. Johannes Lochner won the race for Germany and finished second overall, while Adam Ammour took third place, resulting in a German sweep of the two-man bobsleigh medals.

Wolfgang Kindl of Austria made history by winning a luge World Cup doubles race and a men’s singles race in the same weekend in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Kindl became the first slider in 32 years to achieve this feat, completing the races two hours apart. He teamed up with Thomas Steu for the doubles victory and held off Dominik Fischnaller of Italy for the singles win.

Kindl’s accomplishment was recognized by the International Luge Federation, highlighting him as the fourth men’s slider to achieve this weekend sweep, joining names like Norbert Huber, Hansjorg Raffl, and Wilfried Huber from previous years.

Moving forward, the bobsleigh two-woman and four-man World Cup finales will take place at Lillehammer on Sunday. In luge, the women’s singles, mixed doubles, and mixed singles events are scheduled for Pyeongchang on Sunday, while the skeleton world championships for men and women will occur on March 6-7 in Lake Placid.
