Pat DeReamer recently turned 95, marking the occasion with the arrival of a cherished birthday card that has been a part of her life for over 80 years. The sender of this special card is her lifelong friend, Mary Wheaton-Kroger, who will also celebrate her 95th birthday in May.

After six decades of exchanging the same birthday card, DeReamer and Wheaton-Kroger made history by securing a place in the Guinness World Records for the longest continuous greeting card exchange. Currently, they are in the process of reclaiming this record with their 81-year tradition.

The card, with a worn cover featuring a cartoon dog sporting a large red and black polka-dotted bow tie and fuzzy blue ears, holds sentimental value for the friends. DeReamer shared that the dog’s ears, once fluffy balls, have flattened over time but retain their softness when touched.

Inside the card, a whimsical message reads, “Here’s wishing you a birthday that really is colossal,” followed by a playful rhyme about staying young at heart. The duo has added their signatures and the year they signed on the card, turning it into a historical testament of their enduring friendship.

The roots of this unique tradition date back to World War II, when DeReamer’s family relocated to Indianapolis. Feeling like an outsider in the new city, DeReamer found solace in Wheaton-Kroger’s friendship, which blossomed when she was invited to her home.

The tradition of exchanging the birthday card commenced on DeReamer’s 14th birthday and continued annually, even as their lives took them to different cities. The card has evolved into a symbol of their enduring bond and shared experiences over the years.

Their children, who witnessed the annual card exchange, viewed it as a cherished tradition that grew increasingly meaningful with time. Wheaton-Kroger’s son, Don Kroger, emphasized the significance of this ritual in their family’s life.

When asked about the secret behind their lasting friendship, DeReamer attributed it to the power of love and kindness, not only towards each other but also towards strangers. She emphasized the importance of expressing love through simple gestures like hugs and smiles.

As they approach their next milestone, both friends are determined to continue their tradition, aiming to keep the card exchange alive until they both reach the age of 100. Their commitment to this ritual reflects their enduring bond and dedication to staying connected despite the passage of time.
