Part of a high-rise apartment building in New York City collapsed on Wednesday morning, resulting in a section of the structure being reduced to rubble. The city’s fire department confirmed no injuries immediately following the incident, attributing the collapse to a reported gas explosion that caused the incinerator shaft of the 20-story Bronx building to cave in.
Footage captured at the site depicts the high-rise displaying a collapsed corner, extending from the ground level to the rooftop. Videos filmed by nearby residents captured a cloud of dust engulfing the vicinity shortly after the collapse, which occurred at approximately 8:10 a.m. local time.
The affected building is a city-owned public housing facility. In the past, incinerator shafts in New York City buildings were utilized for trash disposal, with subsequent onsite incineration. However, these shafts have largely been replaced by trash compactors that utilize the same chutes.
