“Home Hemodialysis Revolutionizes Kidney Care in P.E.I.”

Must read

A new initiative now enables individuals on Prince Edward Island requiring hemodialysis to receive treatment in the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for lengthy hospital visits. Hemodialysis is a procedure used to manage kidney disease by extracting blood from the patient, filtering out impurities and excess fluid via a dialyser unit, and returning the purified blood back into the patient.

This at-home treatment option allows the dialysis machine to operate overnight while the patient sleeps, providing a more extended and convenient treatment period. Andy Worth, a hemodialysis patient for approximately 18 months, expressed his excitement about this advancement, noting that the extended treatment duration significantly enhances his well-being.

Under the Home Hemodialysis Program, a partnership between Health P.E.I. and the University Health Network in Toronto, patients like Worth are being trained to operate the dialysis machine at home after undergoing sessions at the hospital. Previously, Prince Edward Island was the sole province without a home treatment option.

Lauren Wry, the lead RN for the program, highlighted that patients undergo about 10 weeks of training to safely conduct hemodialysis at home, with significant positive impacts on their quality of life. Dr. Michael Girsberger, a nephrologist, aims for 30% of dialysis patients to transition to home treatment, emphasizing the benefits for both patients and healthcare facilities.

To qualify for home hemodialysis, patients must have a suitable living environment with essential amenities such as water supply, drainage facilities, and dedicated electrical circuits. Health P.E.I. offers maintenance services to ensure the smooth operation of the dialysis machines at home, minimizing disruptions and preserving property value.

The shift towards home hemodialysis not only enhances patient comfort and convenience but also contributes to cost savings for the healthcare system by reducing the burden on in-center treatment facilities. This innovative approach is set to transform the dialysis experience for Islanders, promoting better health outcomes and improved quality of life.
