“Hyundai Eyes Partnership in Canadian Hydrogen Sector”

Must read

Hyundai is considering a potential partnership with the Canadian hydrogen energy sector, as revealed to CBC News on Thursday. The South Korean automaker is placing its bets on decarbonized vehicles as the future of the automotive industry. This announcement follows the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding between Canada and South Korea, outlining collaboration in key industries such as auto and battery manufacturing.

Although there are no immediate plans for Hyundai to establish an auto manufacturing plant in Canada, the company is actively exploring various collaboration opportunities, particularly in the hydrogen energy sector to support Canada’s transition to clean energy. Hydrogen-fueled cars offer advantages such as longer range and quicker refueling compared to electric vehicles. However, achieving widespread adoption would necessitate the development of new infrastructure for hydrogen vehicles, a cost that most companies are hesitant to undertake as they focus on expanding their electric vehicle programs.

Hyundai has placed a significant emphasis on hydrogen as a potential fuel source for its vehicles, diverging from some competitors who have scaled back their investments in the technology. Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association in Toronto, noted that Hyundai is strategically targeting the hydrogen market, particularly in trucks and heavy vehicles. In 2020, the company introduced the world’s first heavy-duty commercial trucks powered by hydrogen.

While companies like Stellantis and General Motors have discontinued their hydrogen fuel cell development programs citing challenges, Hyundai remains committed to advancing hydrogen technology. With a strong market presence in Canada, holding approximately 12% market share, Hyundai’s potential collaboration with the Canadian energy sector aligns well with the country’s advancements in hydrogen technology and fuel sources.

Despite the risks associated with investing in hydrogen-fueled cars, such as the recall of nearly 1,600 NEXO vehicles in Canada and the United States in 2024 due to fuel leak concerns, Hyundai’s dedication to hydrogen technology signals its long-term strategic vision for sustainable transportation.
