Iconic “Eyes on the Highway” Set for Removal

The iconic pair of giant boulders painted as eyes that have been a landmark on Nova Scotia’s Highway 103 are set to be removed as the province moves forward with plans to expand the highway. Jason Smith, one of the original artists responsible for the creation, expressed mixed feelings about the impending removal, acknowledging the necessity while feeling sentimental about the unique artwork.

Smith, along with his friend Neil and their children, painted the striking eyes in October 2017 when the rocks were exposed during highway clearing. The artists have remained anonymous until now, with Neil preferring to stay undisclosed. Initially intended to be emojis, the rocks evolved into eyes with pupils added later.

Despite a brief interruption by an off-duty highway supervisor and subsequent graffiti, the painted boulders quickly became a cherished unofficial landmark, joining other art installations along Highway 103. Smith and Neil have diligently maintained and occasionally touched up the eyes over the years.

The decision to blast the boulders has sparked mixed reactions from the community, with some lamenting the loss of the beloved landmark and suggesting alternative preservation methods. Construction near the rocks has already commenced, with the blasting expected to take place later this month.

Gary Andrea, a spokesperson for the Department of Public Works, emphasized the safety concerns and distractions posed by leaving the rocks in place, underscoring the priority of ensuring the safety of drivers along the highway. Despite the impending removal, Smith expressed a desire to be present when the boulders are blasted, viewing it as a unique experience.

While acknowledging the sentimental value of the painted rocks, Smith acknowledged that their legacy will live on through memories and photographs. Reflecting on the attention and joy the eyes brought to passersby, Smith expressed gratitude for the community’s support and the smiles the artwork inspired.

As the community prepares to bid farewell to the iconic eyes along Highway 103, Smith and Neil’s legacy as the original artists behind the beloved landmark will endure in the memories and stories shared by locals and visitors alike.
