The London Food Bank in southwestern Ontario saw a higher turnout in support of the hungry during the 2025 Thanksgiving Food Drive compared to the previous year. This year’s initiative aimed to address the increasing number of children and youth facing food insecurity, amidst uncertainties caused by the trade tensions between Canada and the United States, according to director Glen Pearson.
Despite the challenges, the community responded positively to the cause. Pearson noted, “I think it really motivated the public. We ended up surpassing last year’s total by the end of the food drive, which reflects the community’s heightened awareness of this critical issue.”
Londoners generously donated 82,624 pounds (37,477 kilograms) of food and contributed $131,165 in monetary funds, resulting in a total of 118,658 pounds (53,822 kilograms) of food collected. With an estimated distribution of 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) per person, serving approximately 11,870 individuals, this supply is expected to sustain the food bank for about three weeks, considering its monthly service to 14,000-16,000 people.
In comparison, the total donations in 2024 amounted to 109,408 pounds (49,626 kilograms) of food. Sixty percent of this year’s collection will be distributed to partner agencies, while the food bank will retain 40% for its clients, with plans to replenish supplies once depleted.
A significant contribution of $85,000 from an anonymous donor was a highlight of this year’s monetary support. The donor, moved by media reports on local child hunger, emphasized the importance of community support in addressing such critical issues.
Looking ahead, the London Food Bank is preparing for its upcoming holiday season drive amid a growing demand for assistance felt by food banks across the province. Pearson stressed the urgency for policy changes to combat hunger as municipal councils declare states of emergencies due to food insecurity.
With an increase in demand, the food bank continues to witness a rise in households and individuals seeking assistance. Young London, an organization dedicated to understanding and addressing youth issues, is actively engaging in surveys and interviews to gain insights into the challenges faced by children and youth in the community.
