The Seattle Mariners secured a spot in the American League Championship Series by defeating the Detroit Tigers 3-2 in 15 innings in the decisive Game 5 of their Division Series. This game marked the longest winner-take-all contest in MLB post-season history. Jorge Polanco’s single off Tommy Kahnle, with a full count, drove in J.P. Crawford for the winning run after both teams remained deadlocked at 2-2 since the seventh inning.

The upcoming best-of-seven American League Championship Series will commence with Game 1 in Toronto at 8:03 p.m. ET on Sunday. Following this, Game 2 will be hosted by the Blue Jays on Monday before the series shifts to Seattle on Wednesday.

This series features a showdown between the top-seeded Toronto Blue Jays and the second-seeded Seattle Mariners. Toronto clinched the AL East title and topped the league with a 94-68 record, while Seattle’s late-season surge propelled them to the top of the AL West at 90-72. Both teams received byes in the Wild Card round.

During the season, Toronto held a 4-2 edge over the Mariners, including a sweep in Seattle for the first time since 1991. Conversely, the Mariners took two out of three games at Rogers Centre in April.

The Toronto Blue Jays quickly rose as contenders after joining the league in 1977, making their first ALCS appearance in 1985 and winning consecutive World Series titles in 1992 and 1993. On the other hand, the Mariners did not reach the post-season until 1995, coinciding with MLB’s expansion of the playoff format to include the Division Series round.

Despite never making it to a World Series, the Mariners have had three ALCS appearances, with the last one in 2001. They recently swept the Blue Jays in a Wild Card Series in 2022.

The Toronto Blue Jays are riding high from their 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees in the ALDS, where stellar pitching performances from Kevin Gausman and Trey Yesavage, along with offensive contributions throughout the lineup, propelled them. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led the charge with a .529 batting average and nine RBIs.

The Blue Jays are optimistic about the return of key players like star shortstop Bo Bichette, who is recovering from a knee injury, and pitchers Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt. The Mariners, on the other hand, have a standout in catcher Cal Raleigh, who led the majors with 60 home runs and 125 RBIs this season.

With a strong lineup that includes all-stars Randy Arozarena and Bryan Woo, the Mariners are gearing up for a competitive ALCS. Arozarena showcased his prowess with 27 home runs, 31 stolen bases, and 76 RBIs, while Woo, with a 15-7 record, missed the ALDS due to injury but could make a return for the upcoming series.

The Pacific Northwest has historically been a welcoming venue for the Blue Jays, with strong fan support from British Columbia during their visits to Seattle. However, the higher prices for playoff tickets and potential restrictions on out-of-region sales may give the Mariners a home-field advantage in the coming series.
