Max Scherzer gears up for pivotal ALCS Game 4

Must read

The Toronto Blue Jays are counting on Max Scherzer to bring his usual intensity when he takes the mound for Game 4 of the American League Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night.

Scherzer expressed his excitement for the postseason challenge, emphasizing his desire to perform in high-pressure situations. The 41-year-old pitcher last appeared in a game during the regular season on September 24 against the Boston Red Sox. With an impressive postseason track record, Scherzer is set to make his 26th playoff start and 31st overall appearance.

Both Scherzer and fellow right-hander Chris Bassitt were included in the Blue Jays’ ALCS roster following their absence in the Division Series against the New York Yankees. Bassitt showcased his skills by delivering 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief during Monday’s 10-3 loss to the Mariners.

Bassitt expressed confidence in Scherzer’s ability to perform at a high level, expecting him to deliver his best on the field. Despite Scherzer’s recent struggles in the postseason, with a winless streak in his last eight playoff starts since the 2019 World Series, the veteran pitcher remains determined to excel.

Acknowledging his performance dip towards the end of the regular season, Scherzer admitted to needing time to address physical issues. Manager John Schneider revealed that neck discomfort had hindered Scherzer’s pitching, with additional challenges earlier in the year due to right thumb inflammation.

Having signed a one-year contract worth $15.5 million with Toronto in February, Scherzer maintained a competitive mindset, refusing to attribute his pitching struggles to injuries. The Blue Jays secured a commanding 13-4 victory over the Mariners in Game 3 after facing initial setbacks in the series, setting the stage for a crucial matchup in Seattle.

Scherzer praised the team’s resilience and determination, emphasizing their ability to bounce back from adversity throughout the season. With the series hanging in the balance, the Blue Jays are focused on securing pivotal wins in Seattle to bring the ALCS back to Toronto.
