Canadian hip-hop icon Michie Mee expressed her excitement after Canada Post informed her that she would be featured on an upcoming official postage stamp. The artist, often referred to as the godmother of Canadian rap, was thrilled by the news, describing her reaction as a mix of disbelief and overwhelming joy.
The stamp will be part of a collection honoring Canadian hip-hop pioneers for Black History Month, which includes Maestro Fresh Wes from Toronto and the Quebec group Muzion. Canada Post highlighted Michie Mee’s contribution to the genre, noting that she was among the first to incorporate Jamaican patois into her rhymes.
This marks the first time Canada Post is releasing stamps celebrating hip-hop artists, a move that Michie Mee sees as a significant recognition for women in rap, especially Canadian women. Reflecting on her journey as a hip-hop artist in the ’80s and ’90s, she emphasized the challenges faced by the Canadian hip-hop scene at the time, including lack of funding and exposure.
The unveiling of the hip-hop stamps is scheduled for a private event in Toronto on Jan. 27, with public availability in February. Michie Mee, while grateful for the honor, remains humble, expressing gratitude for being recognized in this manner. She looks forward to the stamp’s reveal, embracing every part of her identity that it represents.
As a veteran in the industry, Michie Mee shared advice for aspiring Canadian artists, emphasizing the importance of financial management and self-belief. She encouraged them to stay focused on their journey and find joy in the process, highlighting the enduring passion she has for her craft.
