In Côte Saint-Luc, Quebec, Raquel Look recently organized a ceremony to commemorate the tragic events of October 7, 2023, which claimed the life of her son, Alexandre Look. Alexandre was among the 1,200 individuals who lost their lives during an attack by Hamas militants at a music festival in southern Israel, where 251 people were also abducted. Tragically, Alexandre passed away while protecting fellow refugees in a bunker, with his parents listening helplessly over the phone at home.

The ceremony, held at a park named after Alexandre Look in Côte Saint-Luc, marked a significant moment as it coincided with the liberation of the final 20 Israeli hostages. Raquel Look expressed her belief that the timing of the event, chosen by her late son, added a touch of joy to an otherwise sorrowful day.

During the ceremony, many speakers hailed Alexandre as a hero, emphasizing the transformation of a mournful day into a celebration. Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, representing Mount Royal, highlighted the hope brought by the hostages’ release and the potential for lasting peace in the Middle East.

As part of the ceasefire agreement brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, numerous Israeli prisoners were also released on the same day. Montreal resident Niall Clapham Ricardo, a member of Independent Jewish Voices, reflected on the mixed emotions surrounding the releases, acknowledging the prolonged conflict’s toll on Gaza and its people.

Faraj Nakhleh, a longtime Canadian resident originally from the Palestinian territories, expressed shared relief for both sides at the hostages’ freedom. While optimistic about the prospects for peace and freedom, he acknowledged the extensive efforts required for rebuilding, given the profound destruction in Gaza.

In mid-August, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification declared a famine in Gaza, citing dire conditions faced by over half a million people. A subsequent United Nations inquiry alleged genocide by Israel in Gaza, sparking controversy and denial from Israeli authorities. McGill University professor Rex Brynen highlighted the monumental task of rebuilding essential infrastructure in Gaza and underscored the international community’s role in holding Hamas and Israel accountable for their commitments.
