New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of Parliament Charlie Angus is urging Canadians to participate in a nationwide boycott of Amazon following the closure of seven warehouses in Quebec by the e-commerce giant.
The shutdown of these facilities has resulted in the loss of numerous permanent full-time positions, as well as jobs at subcontracted suppliers. Angus, along with union representatives such as Félix Trudeau, the union president at the Laval, Quebec Amazon warehouse, is demanding that Amazon provide appropriate severance packages to the affected employees.
Furthermore, they are calling on the Canadian government to terminate all agreements with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and require the company to repay any financial assistance received from the federal government.
Approximately 230 workers at the Laval warehouse unionized last May, marking the first successful unionization effort at an Amazon facility in Canada. Amazon has refuted allegations that the closures are linked to the unionization process, asserting that the primary aim is to enhance operational efficiency.
