Two individuals have been apprehended by Paris authorities in connection with the theft of crown jewels from the renowned Louvre museum, as disclosed by the Paris prosecutor on Sunday.
The arrests were carried out by investigators on Saturday evening, with one suspect, who was on the verge of leaving the country, taken into custody. The individual was intercepted at Charles de Gaulle Airport around 10 p.m. on Saturday, while the other suspect was apprehended later in the evening in the Seine-Saint-Denis suburb situated north of Paris.
Paris police officials were not immediately reachable for comments regarding the matter.
The theft occurred on October 19 when thieves infiltrated the museum, making away with eight valuable pieces of jewelry from the Louvre’s collection estimated at around $143 million Cdn. The perpetrators exploited security vulnerabilities by utilizing a crane to break into an upstairs window during operational hours before fleeing on motorcycles.
The incident sparked international attention, leading to introspection within France regarding what some perceived as a national embarrassment.
According to reports from Le Parisien, the two suspects, both in their thirties, hail from the Seine-Saint-Denis region. They were already on the radar of French law enforcement, with one of them reportedly planning to travel to Algeria.
